Hope UMC New Appointment Announcement

Bishop Peggy Johnson is pleased to announce the appointment of Reverend Maridel A. Whitmore to Hope United Methodist Church as Interim Pastor effective July 1, 2017.

Rev Whitmore

Pastor Maridel comes to us from Historic St. George's in Old City Philadelphia: Cradle of American Methodism, Home of the Time Traveler program, and Mother Church to this and dozens of historic congregations.

Our next Pastor was born and raised locally in Springfield Township and resides there still with her husband Steve. Maridel was called into ministry from Covenant UMC in Springfield and was honored after Ordination to return to them as their Associate Pastor. While on staff at Covenant she enjoyed a range of ministries with the children and the youth, including: the church nursery school, Youth Sunday School, various mission trips to Appalachia, and building what became a lively ministry bringing together nearly a hundred youth from Delaware County and beyond to the church in Springfield every month for free Christian concerts, praise, and fellowship.

Pastor Maridel left Covenant in 2001 to become Senior Pastor of Yardley UMC in Bucks County. She was quite new to them when they and the entire Lower Makefield community were personally and profoundly traumatized by the events of September 11th. Maridel helped members provide ministries of hope and encouragement to help heal this shocking grief. While at Yardley, Maridel led empowering ministries serving children and families. Together they developed an effective weekly program in the evening for kids which included fun family style dinners, choir practice, crafts, and fellowship.

The Pastor's longest tenure was with First UMC in Media. In her nine years as their Senior Pastor, Maridel re-organized their Administrative Structure, established an Adult Education ministry, raised up a new class of church leaders, and helped move the congregation from virtual anonymity to a new and dynamic witness in Media Boro and Delaware County. With Pastor Maridel, the people of First Church put themselves back on the map by revitalizing a small food and clothing ministry which quadrupled in size and scope, and now includes both secular and sacred partners, it is one of the largest food and clothing "banks" in Delaware County. Maridel also led the Media congregation through several necessary Capital Building Projects which had the immediate effect of boosting both the spirit and the morale of members.

The Pastor is looking forward to sharing worship and ministry with all of you here at Hope. And she asks that together we pray our way through to July 1. We will have but a short time in ministry together. The Pastor promises to do all she is able to prepare herself for the challenge ahead. She wants you to know that her hope is that our brief fellowship with one another will be a season of comfort, healing, passionate discernment, and earnest preparation for whatever is to come next.
