Its origins go back to 1790 with the founding of Ebenezer Methodist Church in Philadelphia. In 1942, Ebenezer merged with the Bethesda Church which had been founded in 1831. The new combined church was located in what is now Havertown, at the corner of Eagle and Steel Roads. In June of 2004 Trinity United Methodist Church which was also located in Havertown, merged with Ebenezer. The name Hope United Methodist Chuch was chosen for the new combined church.

• Annual Conference Report: Sandy Young, our Lay Delegate to this years Annual Conference has submitted her report. To view the report, click here: LAY REPORT 2009 (this is also linked on the Download Page).
• CHOIR - Rehearsals right after Sunday worship - Every week - September through June. No rehearsals in the summer.
• BIBLE STUDY - Please Note: Bible Study will be held on Thursday evenings at 7:30 pm.
• FOOD CUPBOARD - Your participation in this monthly drive to attain non-perishable food items for the needy in our area is needed and appreciated.
• COMMUNION BREAD - If anyone is willing to bake bread for communion, please contact the church office or Pastor Jim.
• ADOPT – A – SOLDIER - Please check a recent TLC found on the downloads page to find lists of acceptable items for the care packages for the Adopt-a-Soldier program.
• RECYCLING - LET’S DO OUR PART - We will begin recycling paper each Sunday following worship. Bulletins and other paper can be placed in the bin in the Narthex in front of the coat racks.
• SUMMER SUNDAY WORSHIP SCHEDULE - begins on the June 21. Service starts at 10:00am in Jones Chapel.
• UNITED METHODIST NIGHT AT THE PHILLIES - Plan to attend and see the “World Champion Phillies” beat the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. Bishop Peggy Johnson will throw out the “first pitch.” For every ticket sold the Conference will receive a five-dollar ($5.00) rebate for men’s ministry. Bill Engler is organizing a Hope group – please see him about tickets.
• GROWING HOPE -Hope needs your input and feedback as together we explore how to move Hope forward. Please attend this all important meeting on May 31st after worship at 12:30 p.m. A lite lunch will begin the discussion of the future of Hope? Your ideas/suggestions are important to the growth of the Hope and it’s members current and future.Please let the church office know if you will be present at this meeting, as we have to prepare enough lunch for those attending. • “DINE TO DONATE” - JULY 15 / Applebee’s Restaurant in the Manoa Shopping Center, Havertown will donate 10% of the total amount of your meal purchased at any time on July 15th by
  anyone from Hope. At the time of your dining an Applebee’s flyer must accompany the check for Hope to receive credit. Flyers will be in the church office or in back of the Chapel on Sundays.
  The date of “Dine to Donate” is Wednesday, July 15th.
• ALTAR FLOWERS - A flower chart for altar flowers and the memorial stand for the year 2009, is now in the Narthex. Doris Peabody will be managing the flower chart. If you don’t have access to the flower chart, please call Doris at 610-446-1974 or the church office.
• NOTE TO ALL HOPE MEMBERS - Any member of Hope interested in participating in becoming a Lay Reader please contact the church office. Thank you for your support.
• PRAYER CHAIN - The church office is revising the “PrayerChain”. There is a sign-up sheet in the Narthex along with a copy of the original prayer chain. If your name is on the original list it will remain there unless the office is advised otherwise. If you would like to volunteer to help with calls when the need arises please complete the sign-up sheet.
• WELCOME TO OUR YOUTH DIRECTOR - Hope United Methodist Church of Havertown welcomes Angela Geer as the new Youth Director. She begins her duties on Sunday, September 7th as she meets with the youth, ages 13 – 18, for Sunday School Class and planning session at 10:00 a.m. in the Youth Room. Angela will begin her junior year as a Psychology Major at Eastern University in Wayne, PA. She also is a Lifeguard at the Upper Main Line YMCA where she maintains her CPR and First Aid licenses. Angela is a graduate of Blake High School in Silver Spring, MD, where she participated in the swim team, Christian Group Action and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She grew up in her family as the middle child between two active brothers. She enjoys painting, drawing, swimming and other sports in her spare time. At Hope she looks forward to connecting with the youth in a personal way, sharing the Gospel with them, and being a part of a thriving church in the community. She hopes to see the youth group grow in numbers as she welcomes youth from the area and friends of the core group to join in their activities, fellowship and mission endeavors. • DID YOU KNOW? ..... Hope has a Cemetery Fund which is used for upkeep of the Hope Cemetery located on Manoa Road behind the Odd Fellows building. Plots in the cemetery date back to the 1800’s. Donations may be made to the Cemetery Fund.
• FOOD CUPBOARD - Your participation in this monthly drive to attain non-perishable food items for the needy in our area is needed. The demands continue to escalate. We give our food to the Delaware County Food Coalition housed at St. Mark’s UMC, Broomall. Food, and paper products is appreciated. This collection is held on the third Sunday of each month.

WELCOME to PASTOR JAMES MCINTIRE

We welcome Pastor James McIntire as our new pastor and spiritual leader. The coming months will be exciting as we find a common bond and new working relationship which will forge Hope Church with the future.
Pastor Jim loves nature and the out-of-doors. He enjoys hiking, bike riding and camping, a tradition begun as a child at Camp Innabah and continued today with his family. He is dedicated to providing full inclusion of people with developmental disabilities and addressing the needs of their caregivers. He articulates against injustices of society and reaches out by providing counsel to churches and other non-profit organizations. In his spare time, he likes to read and write.
He has three children in the area. They love to travel as a family on vacation time, having visited New England, Virginia, Washington, DC and New York and spend a week each summer camping together at the New Jersey Shore. They also have participated in a number of mission trips, the most recent having been by Tim and Jim in New Orleans and Mississippi. Tim is 23 and is engaged to be married to Monica Ippilito next June. He is currently employed at Staples in Manoa Shopping Center. Lindsay is 20 and has 1 year left at the George Crothers Memorial School in Swarthmore. She loves to laugh, especially at slapstick humor. Lacey is 17 and will be a senior at Jenkintown High in September. She is an amazing social justice advocate and works to correct any wrong whenever she see it.
Although the children are involved in another Methodist Church we will look forward to having them at Hope anytime scheduling permits.
