A Brief History of Our Church

Hope United Methodist Church is the result of the merger of several earlier churches. Its origins go back to 1790 with the founding of Ebenezer Methodist Church in Philadelphia.
In 1942, Ebenezer merged with the Bethesda Church which had been founded in 1831. The new combined church was located in what is now Havertown, at the corner of Eagle and Steel Roads.
In June of 2004 Trinity United Methodist Church, also located in Havertown, merged with Ebenezer. The name Hope United Methodist Chuch was chosen for this new combined church.

CHOIR - Rehearsals are immediately after Sunday worship - This rehearsal schedule is followed from September through May.
BIBLE STUDY - Please Note: Bible Study will be held on Fridays at 1:15 pm at the Roush Room.
COMMUNION BREAD - If anyone is willing to bake bread for communion, please contact the church office.
RECYCLING - LET’S DO OUR PART - We are recycling paper each Sunday following worship. Bulletins and other paper can be placed in the bin in the hall way between the chapel and the office..
Sunday Worship is at 9:30 am in the Jones Chapel. 9:30 am - Children's Sunday School is held during the worship service.
FOOD BANK INFORMATION - Next Food Bank - July 20th, 1-3pm. - We served close to 50 families at the June Food Bank. Restocking information: check the most recent list - FOOD BANK LIST FOR JULY.
CONNECT BY NIGHT - The guests of Connect by Night will be with us for the month of July. As in the past we try to supply a beverage and snacks for these folks when they come in for the evening. At this point in time there are about 40 persons. We have done this for quite a few years now and the folks are very appreciative of a safe place to spend the night until they find and afford housing. There is a sign up sheet outside Jones Chapel please help if you can. If you sign up for a Saturday, make sure you have access to the church to leave your supplies. During the week the Church Office is open from 9:00 to 12:00 p.m. to leave off snacks.
TEACHERS AND SUPPORT TEACHERS NEEDED! - Please see Pastor Mary Jane if you would be willing to help with Sunday School as a teacher or a support person to help at times.
ADOPT-A-SOLDIER - NEW INFORMATION- We will send the next packages to GySgt David E. Wilson, our new contact for a group of Marine mechanics (15 men & 2 women) stationed in Kuwait who assist

CHURCH OFFICE INFORMATION - The Church Office is closed on Mondays. The Secretary’s hours are Tuesday thru Friday from 9:00 to 1:30 pm.
Any information for This Week at Hope, the monthly Messenger or any important situation that may arise please either e-mail or leave on the answering service and it will be picked up on Tuesday morning.
MESSENGER BY E-MAIL - If you would like to receive the monthly Messenger by regular mail, please let the church office know. The Messenger will only be provided electronically unless requested in print.
CASSEROLES FOR ST. JOHN HOSPICE - The second Tuesday of each month - casseroles are prepared in the Thomas Hall kitchen at 7:30 p.m. If you are interested in volunteering for this stewardship program you can call Kathy Reisch or show up on the second Tuesday of the month.
HOPE PRAYER NET - Hope’s Prayer Group has an Internet prayer chain for our prayer requests—we have named it Prayer Net.
THE LIFE CENTER @ 63rd STREET - A request has come from the Life Center for the following items due to a cut in their budget: single fitted sheets & pillow cases, used bath towels & wash cloths, soap & toiletries, toilet paper, women’s sanitary items, deodorants (male & female), powder washing detergent, breakfast & lunch items, tokens for transportation, Halloween candy, Christmas gifts for children of all ages.
GLASSES FOR THE MASSES - The Outreach Committee will once again be collecting used eye glasses, just frames and just lenses, for the Fairview UMC in Maryville, TN. Pat Cutillo will be in charge of this project and have a box outside the chapel for the collection of eyeglasses.
MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND - The Hope Memorial Scholarship Fund is open to all Hope members.
Criteria for these funds is as follows: (1) must be a member involved in the church; (2) attending a full time educational program; (3) write a short note addressed to the Trustees requesting consideration of funds; (4) a student can apply twice a year for the fall and spring semester.
ALTAR FLOWERS AND CHURCH BULLETINS - There are sign-up sheets for Altar Flowers and Church Bulletins on a table in back of the Chapel. If you are interested in dedicating Sunday altar flowers to help beautify the altar or monthly church bulletins please sign the sheet or contact the church office.
