Tuesday, 30th - Administrative Council - 7:00pm		A Brief History of Our Church Hope United Methodist Church is the result of the merger of several earlier churches. Its origins go back to 1790 with the founding of Ebenezer Methodist Church in Philadelphia. In 1942, Ebenezer merged with the Bethesda Church which had been founded in 1831. The new combined church was located in what is now Havertown, at the corner of Eagle and Steel Roads. In June of 2004 Trinity United Methodist Church which was also located in Havertown, merged with Ebenezer. The name Hope United Methodist Chuch was chosen for the new combined church.

More Hope Happenings:

• CHOIR - Rehearsals right after Sunday worship - Every week - September through June. No rehearsals in the summer.
• BIBLE STUDY - Please Note: Bible Study will be held on Thursday evenings at 7:30 pm.
• FOOD CUPBOARD - Your participation in this monthly drive to attain non-perishable food items for the needy in our area is needed and appreciated. - Next collection, Sunday Oct. 18.
• COMMUNION BREAD - If anyone is willing to bake bread for communion, please contact the church office or Pastor Jim.
• ADOPT – A – SOLDIER - Please check a recent TLC found on the downloads page to find lists of acceptable items for the care packages for the Adopt-a-Soldier program.
• RECYCLING - LET’S DO OUR PART - We will begin recycling paper each Sunday following worship. Bulletins and other paper can be placed in the bin in the Narthex in front of the coat racks.
• The HEIFER PROJECT begins with the first Sunday in Lent. "Promises for Tomorrow" is our theme for helping families not just for today but for tomorrow. Any questions regarding the Heifer Project you can see Pat Cutillo
• Wesleyan Circle is having a SOUP and SANDWICH LUNCHEON on Sunday, March 14 after the worship service. Enjoy soup, sandwiches, hot dogs, desserts and a beverage. Adults: $7, Children 10 and under: $2. For a printable resevation form, click here: SOUP & SANDWICH RESERVATION . Reservations should be made with Lois Scheck or Pat Cutillo by Sunday, March 7.
• PALM SUNDAY - Please mark your calendar for Breakfast at 9:30 am Palm Sunday (3/28/10). Celebrate and meet the new members who will be joining church that day. Sign-up on the sheet on the table in the Narthex so we might know the count. There will also be a sheet for volunteers to help in preparations or contact Gloria Downs 610-789-5326.
• Beginning Wednesday, February 24th through March 31st, Pastor Jim will host a Wednesday Lenten Series beginning at 6:30 p.m. with a “simple soup supper,” in Thomas Hall. All are welcome!
• EASTER FLOWERS/PLANTS - There are order forms in the Narthex for Easter Plants and in the March Newsletter. Easter comes early this year, April 4th. Deadline to order plants is March 28th, 2010. If you have any question please contact the Church Office.
• SIGN-UP SHEETS FOR 2010 - New 2010 sign-up sheets for Altar Flowers and Greeters will be in the Narthex . If there is a particular date you would like, please make sure you note it
  on the new sheets.
• E-MAIL ADDRESS - The church office is updating Hope’s e-mail file.There is a copy of the list on the table in back of the chapel, please either correct or add your name to the list, if you would like church information to be e-mailed to you.

• ADOPT-A-SOLDIER   There have been some revisions in the Adopt-A-Soldier Program. We currently have two soldiers, Kirk Procter and Joseph Swiderski. We are trying to secure another soldier; currently the Wesleyan Circle has sent a package to Pvt. Phil Pass, who was a Haverford grad and whose mother works at the High School. • NEWS FROM ONE OF HOPE’S ADOPTED SOLDIERS - Phil wanted to thank everyone for the packages they sent. When he first arrived in Afghanistan, he was in a more established unit but has been moving into the mountains. There is no PX in these rural areas. They depend on each truck of supplies that comes. So when they run out of soap, razors, etc. they have to wait for the next truck and that can be a long wait. Phil shared his packages with some of the guys in his unit, he said they become family. Some of the things besides the usual toiletries that they are asking for are breakfast bars, power bars, beef jerky, packets of tuna or chicken, water proof matches and lighters (which can be mailed). These items are needed when they are out on maneuvers and can’t get back for a meal. If you send cards for the holidays he will be glad to forward some to other soldiers.

• ALTAR FLOWERS - A flower chart for altar flowers and the memorial stand for the year 2009, is now in the Narthex. Doris Peabody will be managing the flower chart. If you don’t have access to the flower chart, please call Doris at 610-446-1974 or the church office.
• CASSEROLES FOR ST. JOHN HOSPICE - The second Tuesday of each month casseroles are prepared in the Thomas Hall kitchen at 7:30 p.m. If you are interested in volunteering for this stewardship program you can call Kathy Reisch or show up on the second Tuesday of the month.
• NOTE TO ALL HOPE MEMBERS - Any member of Hope interested in participating in becoming a Lay Reader please contact the church office. Thank you for your support.
• PRAYER CHAIN - The church office is revising the “PrayerChain”. There is a sign-up sheet in the Narthex along with a copy of the original prayer chain. If your name is on the original list it will remain there unless the office is advised otherwise. If you would like to volunteer to help with calls when the need arises please complete the sign-up sheet..
• DID YOU KNOW? ..... Hope has a Cemetery Fund which is used for upkeep of the Hope Cemetery located on Manoa Road behind the Odd Fellows building. Plots in the cemetery date back to the 1800’s. Donations may be made to the Cemetery Fund.
• FOOD CUPBOARD - Your participation in this monthly drive to attain non-perishable food items for the needy in our area is needed. The demands continue to escalate. We give our food to the Delaware County Food Coalition housed at St. Mark’s UMC, Broomall. Food, and paper products is appreciated. This collection is held on the third Sunday of each month.
